ca. 1911 Mary Whorley Obiturary, courtesy of Mark Whorley    Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Whorley was born in Bedford County, Jan. 6th 1839, and died at her home near Moneta March 8th, 1911 age 72 years. Mrs. Whorley was the last surviving member af the family of the late John Compton of Bedford County, and a sister of the late Rev. Jas. W. Compton of the Va. Conference. She was converted and joined the Methodist church in early girlhood. On April 17th 1860 she was married to Frank W. Whorley, a young man of solid Christian piety a member of her beloved Church, and native of her county, who preceded his companion only a few months he died Sep. 13th 1910. The ????? (illegible words) his last pastor, feels ???????? at the mention of ???????? mans ????? men rendered ???????? to their community as did brother Whorley." Mrs. Whorley was gentle, retiring, even timid in disposition, yet, of strong convictions, firm and full of faith. A model of Christian womanhood. She was the sunshine of her home, which is noted for its hospitality; especially to preachers. Her health begun to fail months before her final illness which was long and of intense pain, yet, that gentle submissive spirit characteristic of her life remained in evidence. Her funeral was conducted at her home March 8th at 4:30 o'clock p.m. by Rev. J.W. Marsh her pastor, in the presence of relatives and neighbors. Her body was taken on the early morning train to Vinton, the next morning for interment. Five children survive her E.A. and Miss Nellie Whorley of Roanoke, Va. Bascomb Whorley of Albuquerque N. Mex. Mrs. J.P. Thompson, Franklin County Va., and Aubrey Whorley of Bedford County. May they ever live under the hallowed influence of a godly fathers and mothers life, which is the greatest heritage left children.
