Henry C. Purmort finished his education at the Fairfax Seminary, Vermont, and later graduated from Eastman's College at Poughkeepsie, New York in March, 1863. After clerking for a time, he entered the office of Jay Gould at Rutland, Vermont, where he gained considerable experience. Coming to Chicago, he worked for some time in the office of the C. B. & Q. Railroad. In 1867 he went into the lumber business for T. W. Harvey, and later was with Palmer, Fuller and Company. In 1880 he started in the same business on his own account, and has been very successful.
